Cheyenne’s Johnson Pool to Permanently Close After 70+ Years
Swimmers only have a few more days to take their final laps in Johnson Pool before the City of Cheyenne closes it for good.
Aquatics Manager Ignacio Vigil in a release on Thursday afternoon said the pool, located at 303 E. 8th St., will permanently close following the end of opening hours on Sunday, Aug. 10.

Increasing Costs
Vigil says the pool has seen increasing costs to operate and maintain since it first opened in 1954.
"The pool is subject to leaks and thousands of dollars in annual repairs," Vigil said. "In 2024, for example, the pool opening had to be delayed due to leaks and mandatory repair of the pool shell."
Vigil says the city is currently planning a replacement and expansion of the current pool.
6th Penny Project
"In 2021, voters approved a 6th Penny project to design a new pool facility to replace Johnson Pool," Vigil said. "The early design work was approved by City Council in 2024 and included public outreach, including a public meeting and online survey."
Vigil says a replacement for Johnson Pool is one of the projects being put forth to City Council for consideration on the 2026 6th Penny ballot.
Vigil says the replacement facility is intended to remain in south Cheyenne.
