A 42-year-old transient is facing a felony charge following an alleged vehicle burglary in Cheyenne.

Violation of Protection Order

According to a booking sheet, police arrested Michael Patrick Haywood on Morrie Avenue at East Fox Farm Road at 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, for violating a protection order, a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail, up to a $750 fine, or both.

On Wednesday, Jan. 21, Haywood was seen in Laramie County Circuit Court in front of Judge Antoinette Williams on the charge.

Williams appointed Haywood a public defender, set his arraignment for Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 1:30 p.m., and set his bond at $2,000 cash.

Burglary Charge

On Thursday, Jan. 22, Haywood was back in Circuit Court, this time in front of Judge TJ Forwood, on an unrelated burglary charge, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, up to a $10,000 fine, or both.

It's alleged that on or about Dec. 31, 2025, Haywood burglarized a vehicle at Frontier Mall at 1400 Dell Range Blvd.

Forwood appointed Haywood a public defender then asked the state for recommendation on bond.

"The state's got substantial concerns and looking inside that affidavit, some of the individuals that were also listed in here are no strangers to the criminal justice system, not just misdemeanor level, but felony level, and for Mr. Haywood, I'm just looking in terms of contacts that go back to September. I got ... ultimately six different criminal matters in a very tiny window of time. And now that we've got burglary, I know that he's got the VPOs, a substantial history of those in a very short amount of time, I'm just going to ask for $10,000 cash only," the state said.

"The state has zero faith in this individual abiding by any court orders, any laws, or respecting the property rights of other individuals," the state added.

"I can't afford to pay that," Haywood told Forwood.

"Sorry, but I didn't commit any of these crimes," Haywood added. "The violation of protection orders, yeah, I had my issues, but not anything else."

Bond Set at $10K Cash

"Honestly, I do believe a $10,000 cash bond is appropriate," Forwood told Haywood. "When I look at bond, it's not necessarily whether someone can post them; it's whether they're going to follow court conditions and if they're going to violate the law."

"You've not been proven guilty, however, probable cause, at least at this point in time, in charging you has been found, and the multiple protection order violations, I am concerned that you will not follow any court conditions," added Forwood. "So, it'll be set at $10,000 cash."

Haywood's next court date will be a preliminary hearing on Friday, Jan. 30, at 10:30 a.m.

Please remember that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

CORRECTION:

Haywood is 42 years old, not 32 as first reported.
