Lawmakers Recommend Changes in Education Accountability Process

State Superintendent Cindy Hill

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — An interim legislative committee is recommending taking away some duties of the state school superintendent and the Education Department. The Select Committee on Education Accountability on Wednesday recommended legislation that transfers a number of education accountability duties from the Wyoming Education Department to the state Board of Education. Under one provision, the superintendent would no longer be able to cast a vote on the board. The action comes in the wake of criticism by consultants on how the agency under Superintendent Cindy Hill has performed its job on implementing education reforms.Hill told the panel her department has done its job and is fully behind education reform efforts. The committee also recommended a bill that delays implementation of education accountability. The bills will go before the full Legislature in January.
