Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen says that while he supports the right to bear arms, he doesn't see why people need to carry guns into public buildings.

Legislation sponsored by Representative Allen Jaggi (R-Lyman) would allow people with concealed carry permits to carry firearms into schools and public buildings other than courtrooms. The bill has passed the House Judiciary Committee and is now pending in the house.

The mayor says he doesn't see what purpose would be served by letting people carry guns into City Council meetings or the state legislature.

Kaysen says that while the second amendment is important, governmental agencies also have a responsibility to safeguard public safety--and allowing weapons into public buildings isn't helpful in that regard.

Supporters of the measure argue it would actually improve public safety by giving people the ability to defend themselves and others against armed attackers.
