Wyoming students outscored the national average in fourth and eighth-grade reading and math scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress [NAEP] test, according to results released on Tuesday.

The results are for the 2017 NAEP test. On that test, no state scored higher than Wyoming for fourth-grade mathematics. Wyoming was also one of only six states in which over 50 percent of students scored proficient or advanced in fourth-grade math.

In grade eight math, Wyoming's Native American students improved their scores to significantly reduce the gap with the state's White students that was reported on the 2015 NAEP test.

Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow said the ''results show that Wyoming schools and students have a lot to be proud of, particularly with fourth-grade math."

The test is given every two years in reading and math to fourth and eighth-grade students.
