As expected, the Wyoming High School Activities Association and American Legion Baseball both extended their shutdown of sports in the state.

Going along with the latest order from Governor Mark Gordon, the Wyoming Department of Health Department, and the State Education Department on Friday, there will be no spring sport or legion baseball competitions or practices until May 4 and until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The news was confirmed by WHSAA Commissioner Ron Laird and ALB State Chairman Cody Beers.

Both the WHSAA and ALB will continue to monitor the present situation and provide further updates.

At this time, student-athletes around Wyoming will have to continue to work on their own with no face-to-face contact with coaches in a setting for training. Coaches will have to continue to send out workouts and training instructions via apps, social media, texts or phone calls.

The WHSAA is surveying its member schools to find out what they think are the best options moving forward.

Beers reiterated the standing order of a ban on practices (outdoors and indoors), in-person team meetings, or in-person instruction from coaches. Fundraising is allowed but must be done online or over the telephone.

Legion baseball is allowing online meetings and online coaching sessions, as well as other distance learning opportunities.

Beers said he's asking coaches, board, parents, and players to follow Gov. Gordon's orders and advice: "Stay home. Practice extra hygiene. Practice social distancing by maintaining at least six feet between yourselves. Don't mob stores, or allow your kids to gather up for playdates."

This latest delay leaves only three weeks on the high school spring sports calendar.

Meanwhile, baseball is still early in its schedule. Beers added they have no plans to cancel the 2020 season, but he's asking coaches to be prepared for a shortened Wyoming-only season in June and July.

WyoPreps visited with several spring sports coaches, who are hoping to salvage any sort of season they can.

For now, it continues to be a waiting game.
