The U.S. Department of Agriculture is making $4 million dollars in grant money available to increase farmer's market participation in the SNAP nutrition program.

U. S. D. A. Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan says in FY 2008 they had redemption of $1.5 million dollars in SNAP at farmer's markets. In 2011 it was $8 million dollars, or a 400 percent increase.Merrigan says the grants will make it possible for more snap recipients to use their electronic cards to buy food at more farmers markets.
