A large number of Cheyenne voters cast their ballot in Tuesday's special election.

Laramie County Clerk Debbye Lathrop says 36% of registered voters went to the polls, a higher number than she anticipated.

"I thought if we hit 30% we'd be doing good," said Lathrop. "We really don't have anything historical for something like this, because it was just a city-wide election not a county-wide election, so there really wasn't anything to compare to."

Voters shot down a charter ordinance that would have established the position of city administrator by a margin of nearly 2-1.

A canvassing board will officially finalize the results on Friday.
