It's not a scientific survey, but a strong majority of people voting in a Townsquare Media of Cheyenne online poll this week said they don't plan to support a proposed seventh-penny tax to build the Children's Museum of Cheyenne.

The proposal, which goes before Laramie County voters in November on the general election ballot, would implement a quarter of a penny sales tax, or one cent for every four dollars to build the museum.

The poll was available on the websites and facebook pages for KGAB-AM, 101.KING-FM and 106.3 Cowboy Country.

As of Wednesday morning, just under 58 percent of survey respondents said they don't support the proposal while almost 41 percent said they do.

A little under 2 percent chose the "other" category to represent their views.

Several people on the facebook pages said they support the museum but don't think it should be paid for through a sales tax.

Most supporters who offered comments cited the educational benefits to local children.

Opponents commonly voiced concerns about new taxes at a time when the state economy is in a tailspin.

About 3000 people answered the survey, which was first posted on Monday morning.

While scientific polls generally attempt to sample people based on a demographic breakdown that is about the same as the voting public on a given issue, online polls such as this one make no such effort and only reflect the opinions of those who bother to answer the survey.
