It's been nearly a decade since downtown Cheyenne had a grocery store and Cody Martinez is tired of waiting. This week Martinez launched a Facebook page dedicated to bringing a food co-op to the Capital City.

"For nine years, people have talked about bringing a supermarket or a co-op to the area and for nine years nothing has happened," Martinez posted. "It is time for the talking to stop and for the community the take action."

His first step is to form an exploratory committee to scout potential locations and solicit support with the ultimate goal of opening the co-op within the next two years. Martinez is also using the forum to tout the success of similar co-ops in other cities.

"Food co-ops come in all sizes to meet the needs of their communities. They add more jobs, pay better wages, and have an overall lower environmental impact than the average grocery store," he claims.

Along with the Facebook page, Martinez has also posted an online survey asking consumers about their preferences for the proposed project.
