Rep. Chuck Gray [Rep. HD 57] says he is working on a bill for the 2021 Wyoming Legislature that would require health orders in the state to be approved by elected officials before being implemented.

Under current Wyoming law, either the state health officer or any of the 23 county health officers can issue health mandates.

Recent mandates have dealt with the wearing of facemasks to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, as well as hours for bars and restaurants, restrictions on the number of people allowed to gather in one place, and similar items.

Gray says the bill he is working on would require state health mandates to be approved by the Wyoming Legislature within ten days, while those issued by county health officers would have to be approved by the county commission of the county in question within ten days.

Is this a good idea?

Should such orders need the approval of elected officials, or are you concerned that such a law would inject politics into a decision that should be left to medical professionals?

We'll publish the results of our poll next week.
