Someone claiming to work for the Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities (BOPU) is calling local residents and demanding payment for phony water bills, according to BOPU spokeswoman Dena Egenhoff.

She says the caller uses the threat of shutting off water service unless the intended victim immediately makes a cash payment. Egenhoff says anyone who gets such a call should immediately hang up and call BOPU at 637-6460 or stop into the utility offices at 2416 Snyder Avenue to report the call.

She says it's helpful if the person getting the call can use caller ID to get the phone number and other information about the caller. Egenhoff says BOPU reports such calls to the Cheyenne Police Department.
