With the news that independent candidate Jeff Barnes has enough signatures to qualify for the November General Election Ballot, the field of candidates for Laramie County Sheriff in 2022 appears to be set.

All told, five candidates are vying to replace current Sheriff Danny Glick, who is a Republican. Three of the five--Brian Kozak, Don Hollingshead, and Boyd Wrede--will square off in the August 16 primary election for the Republican nomination.

Whoever wins that primary will face Democrat Jess Fresquez as well as Barnes in the general election.

Laramie County is generally considered a heavily Republican county, as is true of most of Wyoming. One of the interesting stories in this election will be whether that holds true in a sheriff's race, or whether Barnes or Fresquez can prove that party affiliations in a contest for the county's top elected law enforcement position don't really matter.

Independent campaigns in Wyoming, as a side note, are fairly unusual. Laramie County Clerk Debra Lee, in a news release on Friday, said ''that to her knowledge, this is the first time an independent candidate has succeeded in a petition drive to gain ballot access for a county office.''
