A  22-year-old Fort Collins, Colo. man was killed when his motorcycle careened out of control and crashed into a  ditch canal on Sunday morning, according to Fort Collins Police Services.

According to a news release, the fatal crash happened just after 1 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26 at the intersection of Centre Avenue and Rolland Moore Drive. A 2002 Yamaha motorcycle was traveling south on Centre Avenue.

The motorcycle went off the right side of the road at the intersection of Rolland Moore Drive and into the empty canal. The motorcycle collided with the far side of the canal bank and flipped into an open field. The rider, whose name had not been released at last report, died at the scene.

The intersection was closed for about 4 1/2 hours while police investigated the crash. Investigators think excessive speed contributed to the crash.
