Kaysen: Voters Should Decide Pot Issue
Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen says that while he can't support legalization of recreational marijuana based on "what I know today", any proposal to legalize marijuana should ultimately be decided by the voters, not the legislature.
Kaysen says Governor Matt Mead did the right thing by ordering a task force to study the potential impacts of marijuana legalization ahead of a possible drive to get the issue before voters. Kaysen says he is awaiting the results of that study, especially in regard to possible legalization of medical marijuana use in the state.
He says it's important to get a reading of the ''social ills" potentially caused by pot legalization versus whatever benefits might be realized.
Kaysen says since a decision on legalizing marijuana would effect everyone, he thinks a vote of all the people, not just those in the legislature, should decide the issue
