There's a good chance you're reading this article on your mobile device while you're taking a quick break from work, cleaning or waiting for the kids to get out of school.

For most people, your phone is never more than two feet away from you at any time. When we leave the house we do the wallet/purse, keys and phone check, every time.

In the near future, you will be able to eliminate the wallet/purse and key portion of that check. It'll be down to only a phone check. Your financial cards are in your phone's wallet, newer cars are able to detect your phone and very soon you'll be able to have your driver license there too.

No more large annoying bags or bulky wallets...just your phone. Now, because the technology is there, doesn't mean you'll have to get the digital ID. The technology will work as another tool for you to use.

In 2020, Governor Mark Gordon signed a bill authorizing digital driver's licenses here in Wyoming. When he signed the bill, it put the ball in motion to take the next step of putting your driver's license on your phone. At that point of time, it was said it would take 2 to 5 years for the digital license to be available.

If you look at the calendar, we're working on year number 4. So, within the next couple of years, the plan could be a reality. IDscan.net says going digital could be a money maker for Wyoming.

Wyoming mobile driver’s licenses are expected to generate an extra $640,000 per year, assuming around 160,000 driver’s licenses are created and that 20-30% of residents in Wyoming participate in the mDL program. The cost of the digital driver’s license would be $10, with the physical license being $10 as well, totaling $20.

Currently there are only a handful of states that have the digital ID available, but there are up to 30 that are working on making it happen.
