Cheyenne Mayor Patrick Collins says his yearslong dream about a large hotel being built downtown might come true.

Collins in his Mayor's Minute column Friday said a hotel group from Nebraska has acquired property downtown and has preliminary plans to build a Hilton Garden Inn.

"Having 100 or more folks in our downtown area each night will really help support Cheyenne’s economy," he said.

Collins last February said a group was looking to build a 120-room, high-end hotel at the corner of W. 17th Street and Pioneer Avenue, just north of the Rib & Chop House, but city spokeswoman Cathyleen Rice says it's her understanding that "some of the people who were partners at that time have backed out from that plan."

"I’m not sure if the gentlemen from Nebraska are the same people who own the property by Rib & Chop," she told KGAB Radio.

While Cheyenne does have a Hilton hotel, the Tru by Hilton at 423 W. Fox Farm Road, Laramie and Casper are the only cities in the state that have Hilton Garden Inns.
