Today it's Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMO's vs Organic. What is the big deal about GMO's that have people questioning whether it's bad in our food or not?  Today on the Top 5 at 7:45, I'll highlight what Prevention is saying about GMO's that just might have you re-evaluating whether or not you want them in your food supply or not.

  1. GMO's Are Ubiquitous - There's probably not one place in the food isle where you will not find GMO's. Especially in all the corn, soy and cotton.
  2. Control By Chemical Companies - What you find on your plate now days, is controlled by chemical companies such as Monsanto, in the tune of about 53% of the market.
  3. Nature Has Become Immune - The chemicals that were out to "help" farmers fight off pests that would destroy their crops, have outsmarted the technique. Now we find that about 500 different species of bugs have become resistant to these chemicals sprayed to "prevent" them. So now what?
  4. Not Really Necessary - We've been told throughout the years that we "need" GMO's, however the Rodale found out something different. Whereas chemical induced food may increase yields within the first few years, organic harvests have out performed much longer, even in the midst of drought years.
  5. No Testing - GMO's have not been tested to see what this can do to the human population over the years. What kind of impact this will have on us and future generations? We don't know. Many think that just because they are allowed in supermarkets that they're safe. Remember that the studies that are done to inform the federal government, are the same ones who produce the GMO seed and the initial data is usually never shared with the public.
