Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon has issued an executive order called "Data Centers The Wyoming Way."

In the words of a news release from the governor's office  The Executive Order outlines a set of principles to ensure Wyoming remains competitive in attracting investment while protecting ratepayers, natural resources, local communities, and Wyoming’s way of life. The framework emphasizes water sustainability, wildlife conservation, workforce development, transparency, grid resiliency and stewardship, community engagement, and national security.

Gordon's EO Mentions Order From President Trump

The governor's order also mentions an executive order by President Trump “President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order promoting advanced artificial intelligence and its role in support of national security; and, as expanded, development of data centers supports the President’s order and policies …”

Gordon's order directs Wyoming executive branch agencies to coordinate efforts related to regulatory efficiency and transparency as well as workforce readiness.

“As America races to build the infrastructure needed to support advanced computing, artificial intelligence, and our nation’s rapidly growing digital economy, Wyoming is uniquely positioned to lead,” Governor Gordon said. “But we will do it the Wyoming way. We welcome investment, jobs, and economic opportunity while protecting our communities, our natural resources, and our citizens from unintended costs.”

Data centers have become a hot topic in Wyoming. Some estimates says that the data center count in the Cheyenne area could reach 70 if all of the proposed facilities become a reality. Wyoming's relatively cool climate and cheap electricity are among the factors that make the state attractive to companies wanting to build the centers.

But questions about water usage, impact on electric rates and other concerns have generated strong public opposition among many residents, or at least a desire to hit the pause button among others. They worry that Wyoming is not properly vetting or regulating the centers as an avalanche of the centers are being proposed.

But data center supporters say the facilities could be a major boost to the state economy and say much of the opposition is fueled by outdated information, and in some cases by fabricated conspiracy theories and unfounded hysteria.
