Gordon Says State Preparing to Appeal Judge’s Ruling On Abortion Laws
Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon says he has ordered the state Attorney General to prepare an appeal to the Wyoming Supreme Court on a District Court Judge's ruling keeping abortion legal in Wyoming.
Ruling Says Laws Violate Wyoming Constitution
District Court Judge Melissa Owens in Teton County on Monday ruled that a law bannng abortions except in cases of rape or incest or when the mother's life is in jeopardy and another that would ban abortion pills are unconstitutional. The judge said the laws violate a provision of the state constitution that says people are responsible for their own health care decisions.
Governor Gordon on Tuesday issued te following statement
“Judge Owen’s ruling is frustrating, still this is just one of the steps in the judicial process. Regardless of her decision, it was clear there would be an appeal. I remain committed to defending the constitutionality of this law and the sanctity of life.
I have directed the Attorney General to review the opinion and prepare an appeal to the Wyoming Supreme Court. As this litigation is ongoing, I will have no further comment at this time.”
