Cheyenne Animal Shelter spokeswoman Kate Miller says so far there have only been two verified cases of rabies in the area this summer.

Miller says the two  cases involved a skunk and a bat. Laramie County had seen a significant upswing in rabies cases in 2011 and 2012 after several years of relatively few rabies reports. In 2012 there were several reported cases of the disease in the Pine Bluffs area as well as the South Greeley Highway region, according to Rick Collord, who at the time was director of the Animal Shelter Most of those cases involved skunks, bats or domestic cats.

But even though there seem to be fewer cases of rabies in the area this year, Miller reminds pet owners that both the state and  the city of Cheyenne  require that pets be vaccinated against the disease.
