Denver Schools to Remove Police Officers from Schools
A vote Thursday night to remove resource officers from the Denver Public Schools was unanimously approved by the Denver Public Schools Board of Education.
The resolution will reduce the number of resource officers in the Denver public schools by 25 percent by the end of 2020. Denver Public Schools will terminate the entire contract with the Denver Police Department, removing all resource officers by the end of the next school year.
The funding that paid for the resource officers is being asked to be redirected to mental health services, psychologists, and restorative justice practitioners. The vote and decision came after protests for changes to the law enforcement system in the wake of the death of George Floyd.
