UPDATE: Theft Charge Dropped Against Cheyenne Man; Lawyer Says He Was Misidentified

A 41-year-old Cheyenne man is facing a felony charge after police say he was caught on camera using stolen credit cards.

According to a booking sheet, police at 4:19 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2024, received a report of a vehicle burglary at 1014 Monroe Ave. in which a purse was stolen.

Police say later that same day, Scott James Schultz Jr. was seen on camera at a gas station using stolen credit cards from the victim's purse.

Schultz was interviewed on Thursday, May 16, and placed under arrest.

He was booked into the Laramie County Detention Center for burglary, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, up to a $10,000 fine, or both, and misdemeanor credit card fraud.

As of 10:15 a.m. Friday, May 17, Schultz had yet to be formally charged.

UPDATE:

Schultz made his initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court Friday afternoon on a single count of misdemeanor theft.

He was released on a $1,000 signature bond and is set to be arraigned on June 14.

DA Drops Theft Charge; Lawyer Says Client Was Misidentified

The Laramie County District Attorney's Office on June 6 dismissed the theft charge against Schultz.

Schultz's attorney, Christopher Humphrey, says his client's arrest was in error and was a case of misidentification.

He says the real perpetrator of the crime is still at large.

KGAB Radio reached out to police spokeswoman Alex Farkas for comment, who told us, "I can confirm that the case is still under investigation, but I am unable to share specific details."
