Cowgirls cap perfect mark at home with 4-2 win

LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team won their third consecutive match and completed a perfect 4-0 mark at home this season, as the Cowgirls defeated Fresno State Sunday afternoon, 4-2.

It marks the fourth time in program history and third under head coach Dean Clower that Wyoming has finished the season with a perfect home record, playing at least four or more matches at home.

The Cowgirls (9-6, 3-2 MW) opened the day by winning at No. 2 and 3 doubles to earn the doubles point in the match. The team of Ana Fernandez and Sophie Zehender won 6-4 at the No. 2 position, while Mihaela Kaftanova and Ida Krause won at No. 3, 6-3. It was Kaftanova and Krause’s third consecutive win as a duo and improves their mark to 9-4 this season as a team.

Wyoming lengthened its lead in the match to 3-0, thanks to wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles’ positions. Zehender capped her perfect weekend with a 7-5, 6-1 win. Fernandez won at the third spot, 6-2 and 7-6 (7-2) over FSU’s AC Hummel.

After the Bulldogs (11-5, 4-2 MW) won the next two matches, at No. 1 and 4, Lucia Malinak clinched the win for the Cowgirls at the fifth spot as she made quick work of Fresno’s Nonnis Marzano, winning 6-1 and 6-3 to give UW a 2-0 weekend.

UW will now travel to Fort Collins next weekend for a pair of matches hosted by Colorado State. The Cowgirls will face UNLV April 17 and San Diego State April 18.
