In the midst of the search for a stolen license plate, a Weld County Deputy wound up finding more than just the license plate - the location of the stolen license plate also exposed the location of an unregistered sex offender.

Around 12 p.m. on March 3, a Weld County Sheriff’s Deputy located a license plate for a stolen trailer on a 2003 Mazda sedan in the area of 1700 Mary Ave. in unincorporated Weld County, according to the Greeley Tribune.

After running information on the 2003 Mazda, the deputy learned that the vehicle belonged to a Ruben Trejo, Jr. and that the man lived in a shed on the property where the stolen license was located.

The deputy then ran Trejo Jr.'s name through police data banks and found that Trejo was a registered sex offender in Brighton. On his February 2021 registration, Trejo listed himself as a “transient”, as per the Greeley Tribune.

The Weld County deputy spoke with Trejo and detained him at the shed on the property after he confirmed that the Mazda belonged to him. Trejo admitted to putting the stolen plate on the car, but told the deputy that he did not know the plate was stolen.

As the deputy went to arrest Trejo, he discovered a clear plastic bag contain a white powdery substance as he was checking the suspect's pockets.

The field test on the substance determined the powder to be presumed positive for methamphetamine. The clear plastic bag contained 1.6 grams of the substance.

Trejo was transported and booked into the Weld County Jail on suspicion of failure to register as a sex offender, theft and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

He is scheduled for an arraignment hearing at 9 a.m. on Wednesday (Apr. 14) at the Weld County Court House in Greeley.
