The walking dead won't be marching through the streets of downtown Cheyenne this year. Organizers of Cheyenne Zombie Fest called off the annual event yesterday, citing decreased attendance in recent years.

"Thank you to everyone who has attended the past eight years! And remember: zombies always rise from the dead," they announced on Facebook.

The event was founded in 2011 as a fundraiser for the Cheyenne Little Theatre Players. Each September, a horde of zombies gathered downtown for a two-day festival featuring haunted tours, horror films, a Zombie Walk, Zombie Fashion Show, Zombie Prom, and a brain-eating contest.

Organizers say the event may return in 2020.
