Cheyenne Sam’s Awarded Liquor License Transfer
Sam's Club will be the first big box store in Cheyenne to sell liquor.
After nearly an hour of spirited discussion Monday night, the Cheyenne City Council voted 7 to 3 to allow Sam's to purchase Cloud 9 Liquorland's retail liquor license.
"We're very pleased with the council's decision," said Deborah Herron, Director of Government Relations for Walmart and Sam's Club. "This is a way for us to deliver on something that our customers ask for."
Sam's plans to construct an 1,800 square foot liquor box within its store and hopes to start offering alcohol to its members by late summer.
But several local liquor store owners are worried the big box store will run them out of business.
"We've had our license for four years," said Ron Gudenkauf, Owner of Outlaw Liquors. "I don't know if we'll have it another year."
Council members Dr. Mark Rinne, Scott Roybal and Annette Williams voted against the transfer.
