A 28-year-old Cheyenne man is behind bars for shooting a firearm multiple times in public and causing disturbances in a residential area of the city on Saturday afternoon

According to Cheyenne Police Department spokeswoman Alex Farkas, police were called to the 2000 block of Van Lennen Avenue on a report that shots had been fired. Officers did not find a suspect on the scene, but were told that he was traveling in a red SUV.

At around 2:18 p.m. a pair of officers saw a vehicle meeting that description near the intersection of East 20th Street and Maxwell Avenue.

As police followed the vehicle, an occupant of the SUV later identified as 28-year-old Gabriel Lopez of Cheyenne leaned out of the front passenger window and fired a shot in the direction of residences on East 19th Street.

Police say no injuries were reported from the shot.

Police turned in their lights and siren to stop the SUV, and the woman driving the vehicle pulled over to the side of the road on East 21st Street. Police approached the car, which had the female driver behind the wheel a one-year-old baby in the back, and ordered Lopez to stay in the car.

But he ignored the command, got out of the car and began advancing towards the officers. Police eventually used a Taser on Lopez and he was taken into custody.

Farkas says Lopez was arrested on seven counts of reckless endangerment, once count of child endangering and one count pf interfering with a police officer. The case remains under investigation according to Farkas.

They may not be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but make no bones about it, police dogs play a vital role in the fight against crime.

In many situations, they're the first ones to put their lives on the line to protect their human partners, proving that not all heroes wear capes, some wear fur coats.
