Cheyenne Designated a ‘Purple Heart City’
The Cheyenne City Council on Monday unanimously approved a resolution designating Cheyenne a Purple Heart City.
The Purple Heart is a combat decoration awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who are wounded or killed in action.
"A lot of us grew up here and a lot of us went away to serve overseas and we are all incredibly humbled to have this honor bestowed upon us," said Brian Olson, Commander of Chapter 800 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
"The individual that actually presented this to Councilman Johnson is my mother," Olson added. "I don't know what it's like to have your son or daughter go off to war and get the phone call that they have been injured, let alone them not coming back, and so I just want to say that it is a true honor."
Cheyenne is the first city in Wyoming to be designated a Purple Heart City.
