Second reading on a proposed 12 month moratorium on data centers is on the agenda for the Cheyenne City Council meeting tonight.

The meeting normally would have been held the third Monday of the month, yesterday, May 24. But since that date feel on Memorial Day, the meeting is slated for tonight.

The moratorium is being sponsored by councilman Mark Moody. You can read it here. It would apply only to new data center projects, not those already under construction.

Proposal Was Heard In Public Services Committee Last Week

The proposal was heard in the council's Public Services Committee last week, and drew strong comment both from moratorium supporters as well as union members who argued that the centers are an economic benefit to the city and should not be paused. The committee ended up making no recommendation either for or against the proposal Unlike the Wyoming Legislature or Congress, Cheyenne City Council Committees do not kill proposed laws, but they do recommend approval or defeat of council proposals.

The Public Services Committee opted not to take a stand on the ordinance.

Members of the public will be able to comment tonight either in person or via zoom. Comments will be limited to three minutes.

The council meets at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers at 2101 O'Neil Ave.
