A candidate who admitted to being a registered sex offender has withdrawn his candidacy for the Laramie County Community College Board of Trustees race.

The Laramie County Republican Party on Tuesday accused Anthony Schmidt of pleading guilty to sex offenses involving children in 2002 as well as soliciting sex from children in following years.

On Tuesday, Schmidt admitted to being a registered sex offender, but argued that he had paid his debt to society.

Anthony Schmidt Issues Statement

On Wednesday, Schmidt announced his withdrawal from the race, issuing the following statement:

In light of the misinformation in the LCRP’s statement and the public comments I’ve reviewed, I have decided it is in the best interest of my family and myself to withdraw from the race. This decision was not made lightly. I genuinely believed I had ideas that could benefit our community, but unfortunately, I will not have the opportunity to see them through. The misrepresentation of my past—whether it be an error in the LCRP statement or, worse, in the court documents—is simply too significant to overcome.

I will continue to live a law-abiding life and ensure my voice is heard when necessary. Although I will not seek political office again, I remain committed to advocating for positive change in our community.

To my family and friends who supported my dream, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
