Walker was born in Hartford, Illinois. His mother was Czech.He had a twin sister named Lucy.
He left school at an early age to work in a factory and on a riverboat. Later he signed up for United States Merchant Marine at the age of 17 in the last months of World War II. After the war, he worked doing odd jobs in Brownwood, Texas, Long Beach, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada and was even a doorman at the Sands Hotel. He was even a nightclub bouncer for a time.
