Gang experts from around the country attended a conference at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs earlier this month, according to a spokesman for the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Department.

Dick Blust says the department sponsored the event, which drew over 70 people in law enforcement and the criminal justice system representing 20 different agencies.

They included the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation and Wyoming Department of Corrections among the Wyoming agencies attending.

Experts from Maryland, Utah, California and Illinois spoke at the three day event. The FBI's National Gang Center says there are more than 30,000 active gangs with about 850,000 members across the country.
