With a drug “DEA Take Back” day scheduled for September 26 in Wyoming and across the country, the Wyoming Department of Health is reminding residents medications can sometimes also be donated to help others.

“Clearing unused medications from our homes is one of the things we can all do to help prevent prescription drug abuse and accidental poisonings and it’s important,” said Natasha Gallizzi, Medication Donation Program manager and pharmacist with the Wyoming Department of Health. “However, we are also hoping items that could help other folks through our program are not lost.”
Gallizzi said items collected through take back events and drop boxes are destroyed via incineration. “They can be a great option for the things our program can’t accept, but we suggest checking whether items are okay for donating before using one of those options,” she explained.
The department’s Medication Donation Program accepts most unused, in-date, sealed medications, but cannot accept or dispose of controlled substances, such as medications for pain, sleep, anxiety or ADHD.
Donated medications can be re-dispensed to low-income residents who don’t have the prescription coverage they may need. For more information or to find a local donation site or disposal option, visit this website or call 1-855-257-5041.
