LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department says a donation by Trout Unlimited should help the fish population in a small lake west of Laramie.

The $35,000 will pay for a new aeration system in Meeboer Lake.

Meeboer Lake is only about 6 feet deep and is susceptible to winterkill, which happens when snow and ice cover a lake and the water becomes deprived of oxygen.

Game and Fish has tried several solutions to winterkill in Meeboer Lake, including using bottled oxygen and solar-powered aeration. The new aeration system will be connected to the grid by power lines, allowing the lake to be aerated both day and night.

Department officials say Meeboer Lake will have bigger fish if the fish stocked there can survive from one winter to the next.
