Cheyenne City Councilman Scott Roybal says people shouldn't assume he will vote for an 8 percent increase in trash fees because he voted for it in Finance Committee on Monday.

Roybal told KGAB radio on Thursday that in fact he opposes the increase. But he noted the 8 percent increase was a staff recommendation, and as such deserved consideration of the full council.

But he also notes the sanitation department does have projects that need to be paid for. He also noted other aspects of the proposal put forward will streamline the fee process and charge customers on the basis of total volume "which will save some folks some money".

He also notes the city is facing some tough issues in regard to whether to expand the city landfill in one way or another or else pay for shipping trash to Colorado. He says various plans for the landfill could cost anywhere from $15 million  $30 million.

Roybal did say he might be willing to support councilman Dicky Shanor's idea of a five percent increase over 5-6 years rather than the 8 percent over the next four that is being proposed
