CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Gov. Matt Mead and legislative leaders on Monday approved an architectural design that calls for splitting the Herschler Building in two as part of the $300 million renovation of the state Capitol complex in Cheyenne.

The Capitol Building Restoration Group voted unanimously to proceed with a design that would create an open north-south corridor through the middle of the Herschler Building, while expanding its east and west wings and making other improvements. The group includes Mead and senior state legislators.

The group last month suspended design work to give its architect and consultants time to address how to improve the Herschler Building while keeping the project within budget. Designs for the Herschler Building portion of the project were running about $32 million over budget last summer.
