Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen says work on a new Public Safety Building to house the Cheyenne Police Department is right on schedule and on budget.

The mayor notes work on some of the above-ground portion of the project is becoming visible for the first time, including steel beams which will support the third floor of the building.

Laramie County voters in 2012 approved spending $25 million in sixth penny sales tax money for the building. Police officials said at the time that the department's current home on Capitol Avenue was too small and even posed a public safety threat due to moldy marijuana which was stored in one area.

They also said the building was designed to support modern electronics or computer systems and was already hindering police operations, with the situation getting worse over time.

The city council eventually chose the former Dineen Car Dealership in downtown Cheyenne, in part because much of the existing structure could be incorporated into the new facility.

Kaysen says if all goes as planned the department should be able to move into it's new home in February or March of next year. Besides the police department, the new building will also house the Cheyenne Fire and Rescue Department administration as well as other emergency responders.
