Laramie Community Clean-Up Day Looking for Volunteers

Every year, the City of Laramie organizes a community clean-up day to help the Gem City get ready for spring. This year it will take place on Saturday, April 14th and they’re hoping for another great turnout of volunteers.

The day will start at 8 AM at the city annex building at 4th and Grand where participants can pick up trash bags and safety vests and sign up for a cleanup area. Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves and wear appropriate clothing. Lunch will then be provided from 11 AM to 1 PM in the alley adjacent to the city annex building. Work will continue until completion.

Priority areas for the clean-up day will include entrances to the community such as Interstate 80 ramps, high visibility areas such as East Grand Avenue, Snowy Range Road, parks, the Laramie River, and Spring Creek according to Laramie Code Enforcement Officer Brian Forster. He adds that anywhere volunteers would like to clean up, they are welcome to do so.

“People can volunteer to clean up an area, or even clean up their own properties,” said Forster. “Some neighbors get together and organize a neighborhood cleanup.”

Volunteer groups can reserve a work area in advance by contacting the Laramie Economic Development Corporation at 742-2212. If you are interested in volunteering as a griller and server at the volunteer lunch, contact Brian Forster at 721-5285.

So how much difference can one day make? Forster reports that last year, 490 volunteers picked up approximately 13 tons of trash. In addition, over 500 vehicles went through the landfill and several dumpster loads of rubbish and other “stuff” were removed from the river.

Basic landfill fees will be waived on clean-up day, which Forster says includes general household waste. Fees will still be charged for tires, refrigerators, trailers and dead animals.
