Heavy Snow Slows Bikers in Grand Teton National Park

Jeffrey Kaphan / Moment

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — Grand Teton National Park officials say heavy snow could delay the opening of the popular Teton Park Road.

Park spokeswoman Jenny Anzelmo-Sarles says the road typically opens by mid-April, but “there’s not a definitive timetable.”

Road crews began spring plowing from the Taggart Lake parking area to Signal Mountain Lodge on March 24, preventing use by Nordic skiers and other winter sports fans. But more than 40 feet of snow takes a while to clear, so cyclists will have to wait.

The heavy winter snowfall means the popular biking season will be brief. Even with a mid-April opening, there would be only about two weeks of traffic-free roads before Teton Park Road is opened to vehicles May 1.
