Fuel Tax Increase Moves On In Wyo. House

Wyoming Capitol (Amy Richards/TSM)

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A proposal to raise Wyoming fuel taxes by a dime a gallon is set for a second vote in the state House of Representatives.

The House on Thursday is scheduled to consider a proposal to hike the tax from the existing rate of 14 cents a gallon up to 24 cents. The hike would raise about $70 million a year for the state highway system and local governments.

The House on Wednesday narrowly approved the tax increase on its first vote. Supporters said the state highway system and local governments need a steady source of road funding.

Some opponents said the transportation department should be more efficient. They said working families can’t afford to pay higher taxes.
