Fire at a three-unit apartment building at 2012 Evans Avenue Tuesday afternoon caused $5,000 in damage. There were no injuries.

Firefighters were called to the apartment building at 2:11 p.m. and arrived on scene three minutes later and reported seeing flames at the back of the structure. Firefighters had the fire under control by 3 p.m. Most of the damage to the apartment building was to the rear of the structure. The fire started outside and moved quickly inside. There was smoke damage throughout the building.

One occupant was at home at the time of the fire, but escaped unharmed.

The accidental fire was caused because of improper disposal of smoking material. Fourteen firefighters responded to the call along with the Cheyenne Police Department and American Medical Response.

Evans Avenue was closed between 20th Street and 21st Street while firefighters were on the scene.

Cheyenne Fire & Rescue reminds residents that smoke alarms save lives.
