Wyoming Department of Health spokeswoman Kim Deti says the agency is using a grant to make sure emergency responders across Wyoming have automated chest compression devices.

The $1.7 million grant was awarded by the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. The devices deliver chest compressions on heart attack victims more effectively and consistently than CPR performed by hand, according to Deti.

She says it also frees up emergency responders to perform other tasks, such as transporting heart attack victims to a hospital. Deti says the devices "will literally save lives" in Wyoming.

She says the first phase of the program is a series of training sessions across the state over the next couple of months. More information on the WYCODE (Wyoming Compression Devices and  Evaluation) project is available online.
