The Cheyenne City Council gave preliminary approval to a plan to increase trash fees by five percent annually over each of the next five years.

But that decision still faces a May 26 vote before being finalized. The city council finance committee last week voted in favor of an 8 percent increase over each of the next five years, with the first taking effect on July 1.

But councilman Dicky Shanor put forward a motion to raise the fees by only five percent annually, and that measure won support by a 6-3 voted If the five percent figure is finalized, average residential trash fees would go up by about $1.10 on July 1.

Council members Mark Rinne, Mike Luna and Richard Johnson voted against the five percent increase.
