A Cheyenne Police officer was assaulted Sunday night while investigating a burglary, according to police spokesman Dan Long.

He says Officer Becky Juschka was responding to a report of a burglary at 207 East 6th Street at around 9:45 p.m.. Long says Juschka was interviewing 22 year old Daniel Bunning in front of the building when Bunning hit her in the head with a rotating push up handle. Long says Bunning then fled the scene, but Long says he was captured a short time later in the 800 block of house avenue.

Police say further investigation found Bunning had illegally entered unit #4 of the building, where a 63 year old man lived. Bunning allegedly damaged the unit and held the man against the wall before leaving. Bunning then allegedly went into unit #3, which was unoccupied, and caused more damage.

Long says Bunning took the push up handle from that unit that was used to assault the officer. Bunning is charged with Assault on a Police Officer, Unlawful Entry and Burglary.

Officer Juschka was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, where she was treated for her injuries and released.
