CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A man who pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in the death of a man during what prosecutors say was a botched robbery attempt at a Cheyenne motel has been sentenced to 20 to 24 years in prison.

Dagoberto Ontiveros was sentenced Friday for the December 2014 death of Anthony Hayward, who was found face-down and motionless on the floor of the room he rented at the Big Horn Motel. An autopsy revealed that Hayward had died from asphyxiation.

Police say Ontiveros told them he had been in the hotel room, but he claimed he was too drunk to remember anything.

Ontiveros and his co-defendant, Joshua E. Bowen, each pleaded no contest to a single count of second-degree murder.

Bowen is awaiting sentencing.
