A 34-year-old Cheyenne man has been arrested for child abuse following the death of a 2-year-old boy earlier this week.

Police spokesman Officer Kevin Malatesta says police were called to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center on May 22 to investigate injuries to two-year-old Christopher Clark.

The boy had suffered extensive bruising to his head, abdomen, back, buttocks, legs and arms and also had two black eyes. Christopher was taken to Children's Hospital of Colorado, where he died on May 23.

Investigators learned the boy had been left in the care of 24-year-old John Barrett by Christopher's mother, 34-year-old Cynthia Clark of Cheyenne.

Barrett has been arrested by police on a charge of child abuse, and Malatesta says other charges could also be filed against Barrett.

Police served a search warrant at Barett's home at 1110 E. 23 St. earlier today (May 26), and Malatesta says the investigation is continuing.
