The Cheyenne Urban Forestry Division and Plan-it Geo are conducting a private tree inventory over the next week or so, as the city braces for the arrival of an insect pest which has killed tens of millions of ash trees across the country.

The Emerald Ash Borer has not yet been found in Cheyenne but has been detected as nearby as Longmont, Colorado. In order to plan how to best deal with the pest, staff from Plan-it Geo are going door-to-door in the city, giving people information about the inventory and asking for permission to access private trees.

In some cases, staffers may need to get into people's backyards to get more information about trees, and specifically ash trees. City Forester Mark Ellison says the inventory is being paid for with a $10,000 state grant.
