The Cheyenne City Council is slated to take up a proposal that would allow city residents to keep chickens tonight.

The proposal has already passed first reading of the council's Committee of the Whole, which includes all nine council representative but not Mayor Rick Kaysen, who also votes in regular city council meetings.

Supporters of the proposal to allow chickens say it's a property rights issue and say keeping chickens would allow people to have fresh eggs. They also say the birds are a great way to control bugs.

Opponents say they are concerned about hygiene, odors and flies and say people who want to keep livestock should move to the country.

On second reading tonight, councilmembers will have the opportunity to offer amendments to the proposal ahead of a likely third and final reading at the next city council meeting.

Tonight's meeting starts at 6 p.m. in city council chambers.
