Cheyenne Celebrates Arbor Day

Think Stock

The City of Cheyenne is getting geared up to celebrate Arbor Day during a special ceremony on Monday, April 28, at 11 a.m. The event will take place on the Supreme Court Building located at 24th Street and Capitol Avenue.

The ceremony will include the reading of the official Arbor Day Proclamations, Tree City USA Award and the State Arbor Day Poster Contest Winner. This year’s Outstanding Arbor Day Award recipient goes to Cheyenne resident Dennis Hemmer, who will be acknowledged at the event.

Following the ceremony, in the spirit of the day and tradition, a White Fir will be planted, donated by the XJWC (X-Junior Women’s Club) of Cheyenne. Free seedlings and Arbor Day cookies will be handed out to those who attend the event while supplies last.

According to historians, Arbor Day started in 1872 in Nebraska. It was a vision of Julius Sterling Morton (1832-1902), a Nebraska journalist and politician originally from Michigan. For the homeowner, Arbor Day is typically the time to take stock of the trees on your land and plan for the future.

What will you plant this Arbor Day? What are some of the traditions you and your family partake in this time of year?
